Assignment #24: 8th Grade Civil War Predictions

Hello Students!
This week, we will be looking at the factors that drove the northern and southern state to civil war. In class, we will read and discuss chapter 14, sections 1 and 2. Now I want your opinion. Who is going to win the civil war? Now, we all know how it ends, but simply looking at what we have done so far, I would like you to use this information and make a prediction about who will be victorious. Click on the comment link under this post, and then write a minimum one paragraph argument on who you believe will win. Make sure to use information taken from class, but also use your own opinion (I would like at least two different facts). Make sure your arguments are not only appropriate, but also can be supported. Write your name at the top of your comment.

I believe that the north will definitely win. The north first of all as far more people than the south. Second, they have far superior industry already set up, and they can create weapons faster and easier than the people in the south. Third, they already have a standing army ready to go. How is the south going to complete against that?

I think that the south will win. Although they do not have as much industry, they still have one thing the north needs: cotton. Too many people will need clothing and other cotton goods and will begin to protest over time. Also, if the north and south go to war, the north will lost thousands of jobs in the textile industry, which will hurt their economy. The south also has a trading partner in Britain, who would probably be willing to help out the south if they were to secede. My last point is that during the Revolutionary War, the Patriots were supposed to lose. But they were fighting for a cause they believed in and had a home field advantage. And they won. The south has the same advantage. It's the south all the way.

  3. hey Brian this is Ricardo Rasner, from your Computer credential class I wanted to comment on your blog. I think it is very cool how the students are responding to the Civil War prediction question. This is a very cool way for students to interact from home and extend the learning day into the afternoons, evenings, and weekends. I think this is also a good way to get parents to stay involved with helping their kids. It seems that as students get older into middle school and high school parents get less and less involved.
